…People remember things better, longer, if they are given very challenging tests on the material, tests at which they are bound to fail. In a series of experiments, they showed that if students make an unsuccessful attempt to retrieve information before receiving an answer, they remember the information better than in a control condition in which they simply study the information. Trying and failing to retrieve the answer is actually helpful to learning. It’s an idea that has obvious applications for education, but could be useful for anyone who is trying to learn new material of any kind…
Seeing as how I’m studying for a test that I feel bound to fail, I’m hoping this information is reliable and valid.
Wish I could have read this 4am instead of 40 minutes before the midterm I am about to fail.

How’d you like it if I came over with my clique?
Greatest intro of any song… ever. I mean ever.
I’ve always been one to minimize, organize and optimize so I truly love this site and look forward to seeing what’s posted each day.
Here’s a picture of my Mac setup at work: a 13” Macbook and 24” Cinema Display. Besides Spotlight, the only icons in my menu bar are battery, analog clock (so it shows as a small icon) and WiFi. My dock is hidden and has just two items: my Downloads folder and a Work In Progress folder which is part of my MobileMe iDisk so I can always access files easily from work, home or my iPhone. I stay away from widgets and 3rd party add-ons as much as possible to ensure I use minimum system resources. Instead I optimize use of what Apple has provided (such as using Spotlight to launch apps) and I often use web apps (like HootSuite) so I use one app (Safari with hidden nav, stat and toolbars) instead of a bunch of different ones. My wallpaper is usually much simpler as well, but I make exception for Holidays.
Note: The paper iPhone stand I made from using instructions from this site and an old iSight Camera box.

Senator Chuck Hagel has a great sense of humor, and he loves Halloween. Two years ago, just before Halloween, Hagel showed up at a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing chaired by then Committee Chairman Joe Biden in a “Joe Biden mask” urging those there to vote for him.
According to senior Hagel senate staff alumni, Hagel used to wear a chicken costume at Halloween years ago — and once dressed up as Colin Powell in a meeting to go see General Powell when he was serving as Secretary of State. Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage had to personally intervene to get Hagel into the building.
Hagel also wore a John McCain mask at a McCain event — and did this with Senator Pat Roberts too.
So, I returned the favor last night — appearing in a Joe Biden mask to introduce Senator Hagel to offer some levity in what was a very important dinner focused on Israel-Palestine issues at J Street’s big gala event.
Taylor Marsh loved it. So did Zbignew Brzezinski and House International Relations Committee Chairman Howard Berman — at least that’s what they said. The Tablet’s Jesse Oxford thought it went over like a dead weight.
Nonetheless, humor helps Washington move forward even when so many policy issues appear gridlocked and hopeless.
It takes political leaders like Hagel who can both be serious and focused — as well as fun — on both sides of the political aisle to make Washington a more constructive place.
